History and Why Curcuma comosa is effective

Coming from the ginger family, Curcuma comosa is a species of flowering plant that is native to much of Asia. Curcuma comosa is most commonly located in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, and is widely cultivated in the Northern Provinces of Thailand, such as Petchaboon and Loei.

As you will have already read, this herb can truly be given the often overused moniker of ‘miracle herb’. But what makes this herb so special, and why are its effects on women so beneficial to their wellbeing and state of mind?

Curcuma comosa helps women with a wide variety of conditions……ranging from menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, post pregnancy and also cosmetic benefits.

The effectiveness of Curcuma comosa prompted studies into its potential as a replacement for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

The following text documents this study – Piyachaturawat P, Ercharuporn S, Suksamrarn A. Estrogenic activity of Curcuma comosa extract in rats. Asia Pacific Journal of Pharmacology. 1995a;10:121–126.

This study, carried out in Thailand at the respected Mahidol University, researched the effects of the crude extract from the root of Curcuma comosa on rats. Results showed that oral administration of Curcuma comosa increases uterine weight and improves glycogen content.  Moreover, Curcuma comosa also effectively increases estradiol binding in uterine nuclei. This indicated that Curcuma comosa has oestrogenic properties and can function effectively as a replacement for Hormone Replacement Therapy and as a valid method of dealing with menstruation and menopause difficulties.
